What makes a civil war?

Our country has never been more divided, except preceding the American Civil War in the mid 1850’s.

Then as now, powerful forces were pulling the country towards a fateful moment. A moment when shots ring out and people begin killing one another.

In all civil wars, those who would profit from war must convince the population of one key idea: it is necessary and virtuous to kill one's fellow countrymen. Why? Because the other political party is a DEADLY THREAT. If not killed, those on the other side of the political issues of the day will kill us, or get us killed first.

In every civil war, those who want to see death and destruction always have the same hallmarks. First catastrophize the policies of the opponents. Next, vilify and demonize them. Third, ignore or minimize violence against them. Then condone violence. Then promote violence. Finally, demand violence.

This time it does not have to be that way. There is still time to reverse the progression. You can still do something to guide us away from polarization and war, and towards moderation and peace. You can do something small but powerful, which will cause people to stop and think.
